Our Story
August 1974 —The Beginning
August What is now Unity Baptist Church began in August of 1974 with a simple but powerful desire—a small group of people felt the need for a place to worship and grow together in faith. With no building to call their own, they gathered in a humble setting: a chicken house owned by the Bowen family, while a nearby trailer was used for Sunday School. Though modest, these early meetings were filled with vision, unity, and a deep sense of purpose.
October 1974 – A Church is Born
As the congregation began to grow, the need for a more suitable space became clear. By October, the group moved into a store building owned by Mrs. Lonnie Denny. It was here that important steps were taken to establish the church formally. On October 9, 1974, the church adopted its Constitution, Covenant, and Articles of Faith. Just days later, on October 20, Unity Baptist Church was officially constituted with around 50 charter members—marking the true beginning of an organized body of believers.
1975 – A Place to Call Home
In January of 1975, God provided in a significant way. The church purchased Vanna Chapel, securing a permanent place for worship. Around this time, Floyd Ray generously donated approximately four acres of land, and the Gunnells family provided access to water. These acts of support from the community helped lay a strong foundation for the church’s future.
1975–1976 – Building for the Future
With land secured, the church began constructing its own building. This new space included a baptistry, Sunday School rooms, and a fellowship hall—everything needed to support a growing congregation. By 1976, Unity Baptist Church held services in this new building, a major milestone that reflected both growth and commitment.
1978 – Growth and Expansion
As the church continued to thrive, further improvements were made. In 1978, the building was moved farther back from the highway, a basement was added, and the structure was bricked. These changes not only improved the facility but also symbolized the church’s stability and continued development.
1986 – A Home for Leadership
By December of 1986, the church completed construction of a pastorium, providing a home for its pastor and his family. This addition reflected the church’s dedication to supporting its leadership and strengthening its ministry.
1987 – Celebrating God’s Faithfulness
In October of 1987, Unity Baptist Church celebrated 13 years of God’s blessings and faithfulness. The anniversary was marked by homecoming and revival services, bringing together members and the community in a time of reflection and renewal. At that time, the church was led by Pastor Jack K. McVeigh, continuing the mission that began in that small chicken house years before.
